Lok-an Taiwanese Grants

The grants were established in 2002 by Taiwan’s Lok-an Hospital and the Association of Taiwanese Romanization. The purpose of the grant is to promote the comparative studies of Vietnam and Taiwan and thus further enhance the cultural and academic exchange between the two countries.

The grant founders will accomplish the purpose in two ways. First, to assist Vietnamese students in completing their theses (BA or MA) or dissertations (Ph.D) on Taiwan-Vietnam related issues. Second, to provide financial support for Vietnamese scholars to publish their research works with regard to Taiwanese studies. The maximum number of grantees and amount of grants provided for year 2003 for Vietnamese students and scholars are as follows:

    Four undergraduate students: 2,500,000VND /grantee
    Two master students: 5,000,000VND /grantee
    Two Ph.D students: 10,000,000VND /grantee
Two scholarly publications: between 10,000,000 and 15,000,000 /publication

Grant guidelines

All applicants seeking support from the Lok-an Taiwanese Grants must meet the following requirements. The requirements are divided into two sections according to the categories of grants. Please read the right section as you desire to apply for.

For the student thesis/dissertation support

1)      Applicants’ proposal of thesis/dissertation must be related to Taiwanese studies or comparative studies of Taiwan and Vietnam in any areas, such as language, literature, history, culture, society and economics. Priority will be given to humanity subjects. Please note that Chinese studies are NOT considered as Taiwanese studies since we have very limited funding, and thus cannot support so many research projects.

2)      All applicants must have citizenship of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and currently are enrolled in the universities of Vietnam or Taiwan.

3)      Applicants’ proposal of thesis/dissertation must have been officially approved by their committee or department. (PS. Applicants may submit their application before their thesis/dissertation is approved; however, applicants with approved proposal will be given greater consideration. If conditionally accepted, the grantee has to supply the proof of approval in one year in order to receive the grant. The grnt will be heold until s/he provides the proof.)

4)      All grantees are required to submit to the Lok-an Hospital, at the end of the period covered by the grant, a copy of their theses or dissertations, which must acknowledge support by the Lok-an Taiwanese Grants.

5)      Once application is accepted without any conditions, the grantee will be immediately granted 50% of the grant. The remaining amount will be held until the grantee’s thesis/dissertation is completed and approved by his/her committee.

For the scholarly publication support

1)      Applicants’ proposed publication must be related to Taiwanese studies or comparative studies of Taiwan and Vietnam in any areas, such as language, literature, history, culture, society and economics. Priority will be given to humanity subjects. Please note that Chinese studies are NOT considered as Taiwanese studies since we have very limited funding, and thus cannot support so many research projects.

2)      Applicants’ proposed publication must be original works of the applicants and have not been published anywhere before.

3)      The amount of grants will be given on the basis of publication rather then the number of authors, in the case if the publication is co-authored.

4)      Applicants may not have citizenship of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, but their proposed publication must be written in Vietnamese or Taiwanese (DO NOT include Chinese or English), and must be published in Vietnam or Taiwan once they accept the grant.

5)      Applicants may submit their application before they complete their writing for publication. However, application with a completed draft in hand is highly recommended and will be given greater consideration. If conditionally accepted, the grantee has to supply the draft in one year in order to receive the grant. The grant will be heold until s/he completes the draft.

6)      Once application is accepted without any conditions, the grantee will be immediately granted 50% of the grant. The remaining amount will be held until the grantee’s publication is officially published in Vietnam or Taiwan.

8)      Applicants, who have received the award in 3 years, are not eligible to apply for funding again.

9)      Please note that Lok-an Taiwanese Grants only provide supplementary financial support to your publication for your research results. Do not consider the grants as a major resource for your entire research project.
